What's in a name?

This is a special thanks to those juggernauts of the English language who pointed out that our society's name was misspelled!

It took a long time to change the name but it is now done.  Our official name is now Kootenay-Columbia Discovery Centre Society, our website address is www.discovery-centre.ca and our email is info@ discovery-centre.ca.  CHEERS!

PROGRESS REPORT

DISCOVERY CENTRE DEVELOPMENT

We have retained an architectural firm to help us review several potential sites for a 'new and improved' Interpretive Centre.  There have been site visits and lots of engagement with the architects on the many aspects of future development.  The terms of reference for their work includes public outreach.  Watch these spaces for that opportunity.

SUPPORT FOR CONTINUING THE TRADITION OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND AWARENESS AT THE INTERPRETIVE CENTRE

PLAN 'B' IS RAMPING-UP!

We were successful in our application for funding from the B.C. Rural Dividend program to conduct a pre-design study of potential sites for the new 'Discovery Centre'.  A professional collaborative has been selected to conduct the study which will include:  Site Selection, Building Concept Design, Engineering Review, Public Engagement and Budget Costing. In other words:  we are seeking the advice of professional architects and engineers to make recommendations that will help us make informed choices based on their investigations AND PUBLIC INPUT.

SMALL STEPS TOWARD KEEPING THE INTERPRETIVE CENTRE OPERATING

Over the past several weeks KCDC has met with representatives from the CVWMA and the Directors of Regional Districts A and B (Larry Binks and Tanya Wall) to discuss how we can work together to keep the Interpretive Centre open while the bigger project - developing a new "Discovery Centre" - is underway.  GOOD NEWS!  We are working together and there is consensus around the importance of keeping the Centre operating!

THE OCTOBER 7TH CLOSURE

KCDC and the CVWMA recently reached out to our elected officials to engage them in a discussion about what can be done to alleviate the loss of our valuable Interpretive Centre programs after closure on October 7th while the Discovery Centre project is underway.  If you are concerned about the loss of this great resource, please let your representatives know!  When all of us work together we can obtain the best possible result!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

We want to thank the many people and organizations who have offered both verbal and written support for the new Interpretive Centre!  A special thank you to the recent letters we received from the Creston Chamber of Commerce and Piper Farms.  Collaborative, forward thinking will succeed in providing the best possible result for this project and the people and businesses throughout the Kootenay-Columbia region!

SITE STATUS UPDATE, July 2017

KCDC has now submitted its reconsideration materials to the Agricultural Land Commission.  We are told it may be on their agenda in August but we may have to wait until September for a decision.  If our ALC application is unsuccessful, we will continue to engage with the CVWMA and the Province of BC in an effort to locate suitable, alternative sites!  We will persevere!

Kids outside? No problem. Its all good!

We live at a time when children - even pre-school children - are exposed to tablets, phones and other electronic wizadry that keeps them seated in a bent posture, some say, far too much!  Ever watch a child pick a flower, chase a butterfly or walk a path amid rustling bullrushes, songbirds and squawking ducks and notice the quick step to here and there and see the glint of wonder in her or his eyes?  For parents and children those are joyous, learning moments!

BUSINESS PLAN AND OTHER BOLD IDEAS

We have had many inquiries asking what "the plan" is.  Well our current Business Plan can be found by going to the Donor's link on the main page and then clicking on the Business Plan link that is hilited in the text.  We are always happy to receive your ideas (big or small), questions, comments and suggestions.  Send them to info@discovery-center.ca. We will respond within 3 business days.
